This is designed for those wishing to train as teachers of the deaf or existing Teachers of the Deaf wishing to 'top up' their qualifications.  The course is delivered at Mary Hare's training centre in Newbury, Berkshire.  Teaching takes place on 6 weekends each year and is supported by a range of e-learning opportunities and materiels.  Teaching weekend sessions are generally from Friday to Sunday and are a compulsory part of the course.

Students achieve the award through completing assignments, preparing and delivering presentations and seminars, undertaking a child study, two periods of school experience, a range of visits, a practical audiology test and a written audiology examination.

The course comprises 6 modules:

Language Development * Audiology * Curriculum Access * Legislation and Provision * Family Support and Professional Liaison * Practical Experience

All candidates will be enrolled for the full MA, with the option to finish your studies after the initial 2-year mandatory qualification.  The additional MA dissertation must be submitted within 5 years of registration.

Mary Hare is the largest school for the deaf in the country, with an extensive training and assessment division that works in partnership with a number of local authorities. These resources support the delivery of the course which also draws on experts within the fields for lectures and workshops.  The course has both a very strong a practical base and high academic standards.

Candidates must hold qualified teaching status - for those not currently working with pupils who are deaf, individual arrangements will be made to provide opportunities for further teaching expereince with such pupils.

"This is the most stimulating post I have had.  It taxes me as a teacher in delivering learning opportunities that children need but there is also the extra layer of challenge and, of course, satisfaction."
