Local schools battle it out with water rockets

Wednesday 7th July 2010

At the end of the summer term Mary Hare hosted the AWE Water Rocket Challenge for the second year. The day began in Arlington Arts with a talk by Ian Dunn from Southampton University. Ian, who believes that it is important to encourage an enjoyment of science in young people, is well known for his interactive science fun days in schools.

We competed against other local schools to build a rocket that could consistently land in a target zone. We were hoping to improve on last year’s impressive second place. After five weeks of scientifically controlled test launches we felt confident about all the necessary considerations for the optimum flight.

The afternoon involved five rounds. We scored points for both accuracy and time in the air but the eventual winners were an excellent team from Hurst Community College. We took second place again but we all felt very proud of our achievements
